Cruising Guide to Eastern Florida

Claiborne Young's cruising guides are well written and contain loads of information for the boater. In addition to the excellent information on safely navigating difficult approaches, etc., he serves up a lot of simply interesting reading. A good example is his historical account of the beautiful city of St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in the United States and Canada. When you consider that the English colony at Jamestown was founded almost fifty years after the settling of St. Augustine, the city's heritage seems impressive indeed. One excerpt points out the trials and tribulations of the early settlers " ...By 1585 St. Augustine had a council house, a church, several stores, and houses for its almost 300 men, women, and children. The city also boasted a crude wooden fort, but not for long. In 1586 it was destroyed by Sir Francis Drake, England's most famous buccaneer...."

Don't take my word for it alone, read what others are saying.

Capt. Matt

from Practical Sailor … "The best book we could find covering Florida's east coast is Claiborne Young's Cruising Guide to Eastern Florida."

— from MAINSHEET... "If a southeast coastal destination is in your cruising future, plan to sail with the local knowledge provided by writer Claiborne S. Young, who has penned three great books on this area of the country ... these books detail invaluable information on marinas, anchorages, shoreside attractions, restaurants, and general navigational know-how. The author rounds out the books with coastal history, legends and folklore to add to the pleasure and drama of each cruising location ... my thanks to Claiborne S. Young for providing me with these three wonderful books and sharing his cruising adventures with all of us."

— from the SUN SENTINEL, Ft. Lauderdale... "Young's enthusiasm comes across in his books, especially in his historical notes. While researching a book, he might cruise from sunrise to sunset, day after day, taking his own depth sounding, estimating the biggest boat that can safely berth at a particular dock, checking regulations and speaking with locals to get a flavor of the area and its offerings."

from CRUISING WORLD... "contains hard-core cruising tips from a veteran southern cruising man."

— from THE ISLANDER NEWS, Key Biscayne ... "The author, has done a creditable job of translating his own cruising experience to invaluable information for people who want to try their own hand at going off into the wild blue waterways .... This format doesn't make the person feel he has to read 'War and Peace' just to get out of a channel .... The writing is clear, the maps and photographs are well laid out, and the books seem like an ideal primary source for anyone interested in the nooks and crannies and waterways of the Sunshine State."
